  • Jean-Jacques Stephen Alexis
    Jean-Jacques Stephen Alexis
    Poet; Visual Artist; Curator
About JanJak II My work explores the relationship between the colors of my native Island and the desire to translate on canvas the Caribbean identity and the Marvelous Realism displayed in the works of Alejo Carpentier, Jacques Stephen Alexis and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. My influences are as diverse as Herve Telemaque, Ti Ga and Levoy Exil. New variations are pursued, but with every brush stroke, I aim to bring the warmth of the Island Sun and the desire to capture something of this unique but elusive Caribbean "essence". Ever since I was a child, while taking art classes at "Poto Mitan" and the “Musee d'Art Haitien", I have been fascinated by the marvelous colors of Raymond Olivier, the mysticism of Rose-Marie Desruisseau, the shapes of Patrick Vilaire, and the surrealism of Bernard Sejourne. In my work, I intend to render a fusion of all of these influences and trends, to deliver accidental magic, simple, strange, and powerful, like Jean-Michel Basquiat, innocent yet violent like Purvis Young, and wild like Indian bad boy MF Hussain. What starts out as a line, a portrait, or a still life, inexplicably takes a trip towards the unknown, and the surreal soon becomes manipulated into a cacophony of colors, leaving only a sense of confusion, yet attractive to the eyes. As temporal phenomena become distorted with interventions from dreams mixed with everyday landscapes, the viewer is left with a statement of joy and the feeling that working with colors suggests an authentic "Caribbean" sensibility. This marvelous fusion reveals an emerging "postmodernist" consciousness in the quest for an authentic Modern Afro-Caribbean Art.
  • Fabiola Alvarez
    Fabiola Alvarez
Actor; Choreographer; Dancer; Filmmaker; Storyteller; Visual Artist; Writer
I started my art education at the conservatory de Castella. The reason why I wanted to start going there was because I did a tour of my first art school and saw this dancer having her moment with a violin musician. My director, Mr. Arnoldo Herrera, asked me the reason why I wanted to go there. I told him I needed to dance for the rest of my life. Later on, I discovered that I was not only in love with my dance and ballet classes, but also with plastic arts. By the age of 8, my dad wanted me to learn English, so I traveled to the United States, and by the age of 14, I was already moving with him to Miami, Fla. I first got to Howard A. Doolin Middle School (closed in 2012). My father enrolled me at South Miami High, where I was accepted into ballet classes for the Nutcracker Show and later admitted to the plastic arts program, where I gained my first experience as a dancer model for the art class. Later on, my mom came to the States, and we moved to Fort Lauderdale. There she started to work with Mr. Gary Destin, a real artist who was one of my art mentors there in Hollywood. He thought I was a good candidate to begin attending the Dillard Center for the Arts, where I met Mr. Celestin Joseph, and he encouraged me to always "think outside the box" with my art work. His first notation on my art work was "terrific," and I was mad at him because I wasn't really sure if that was a good or bad grade on my drawings. He later on explained to me that it was actually a good notation and showed me the real meaning of that expression. My sculpture teacher's name escapes me, but she was the first person who was always by my side, guiding me through every artistic step. She showed me how to do my first bust. I remember one classmate coming up to me saying, "It is the most horrible bust I have ever seen." I was deeply offended, but God spoke to my heart, saying, "That's how I feel when you say you're ugly." Mr. Celestin asked us to make a drawing of ourselves. I went home and Mr. Destin helped me by showing a new technique, and the next day I was proud of my drawing. My art teachers asked me to exhibit my drawings at the Fort Lauderdale Museum. I did it proudly, thinking that I was part of the creation, grateful for every part of my dancer body. I came back to my country to continue with dance classes and was chosen among 80 dancers to be part of Conservatory el Barco. At the end of the season, I was cast to be part of a Disney show with choreographers from Orlando, and I was chosen again among 200 Costa Rican dancers. In my free time, I used to teach dance and art classes in the community churches around me. Later, I was chosen to be part of the Nutcrackers and Coca-Cola shows in CR. Later on, I got married and had two kids. My ex-husband was not happy with me being a dancer, so I started to paint a little more, but my kids and my job at different call centers did not give me enough time or inspiration to paint. After my separation, I started to do art events with different clothing designers, offering my art shows mixing body paints and dance, and that's basically what I have kept doing while I am also working at a QA department in a sportsbook, and helping my brother at the Falcons goalkeepers agency he opened about 3 years ago, and that's where my kids, Santiago and Felipe Gomez, train in football. I am now planning to do a future event with my mentor, Gary Destin, to help an organization that helps people with cancer. I will continue to do dance shows and modeling for different photographers, along with body paint shows and art pieces of my own. My main desire is to be able to show my kids my bust and complete it with a crown I was given for dancing at one of the most important beauty contests, "Reina Intercontinental", which helps this cancer organization. I will also be working on my visa to go visit my art school, Mr. Joseph and Mr. Destin.
  • Carlos Alvarez Cotera
    Carlos Alvarez Cotera
    Visual Artist
Born in La Havana, Cuba in 1966. Lived in Costa Rica for 4 years since the age of 14 and in the US since 1985.   At a very early age I became very interested in drawing and have never stopped since. As it turns out, this became the strongest foundation in becoming the artist I am today.   I have no formal training and I have not read any art books. My ability to do what I do comes from much experimenting, a lot of messing up, watching other artists and asking questions. I strongly believe in doing all of my work freehand and refuse to use any type of aids such as, tracing, grids, projectors and the like.    I have experimented with many different forms of art; from pencil drawing, watercolor, acrylic and oil to jewelry making, working with clay and creating tile mosaics, plus a few other things in between, however, for the most part, I have concentrated mostly on painting in the last few years.   ?I have been blessed to be able to dedicate my life to do that which I believe I was born to do; and I have been privileged to teach others for many years now. As a teacher, it is my goal to help others improve their ability to see; seeing that which has become second-nature to me.   In the last 16 years as a professional artist, I have owned and ran a Gallery/Frame shop; I have been represented by galleries, I have been part of many exhibits, been featured in may articles, my work is in private, public and corporate collections and I have won many awards. None of this is that important, it is here just to let you know a bit about my history.    As grateful as I am for everything, nothing matters more than the opportunity to use my art to express life and share it with others.
  • Beth Amato
    Beth Amato
    Visual Artist
Studio 18 in the Pines is home to my studio. Public gallery hours are M-F 9:30-6 or by appointment. Please stop by and say hello! Biography As a child, Beth envisioned her adult self sitting at a desk coloring as her career. She didn't know at the time how accurate that would be. A graduate of Ringling College of Art + Design, she has produced thousands of commercials, worked on government and commercial simulations, video arcade games, published her photography, won awards and made jewelry. She's most proud of having the ability t o encourage, educate and share her passion for a wide variety of visual art with others. __________________ Beth Amato is an East Coast artist, having lived half her life in Rhode Island and the other half in Florida. At 21, knowing deep down that something was missing in her life direction, she applied, and was accepted to Ringling College of Art and Design. In 1992 she transferred to Ringling, in Sarasota, as a computer animation BFA candidate. During her tenure at Ringling, Beth apprenticed in a variety of artistic fields in addition to computer animation including faux finishing, printing, sign making and magazine production all while holding down a steady course load of studio classes. She knows this adventure reinforced the fierce work ethic fostered in her formative years. After graduating, the adventure continued while Beth honed her art, design and computer skills in professional environments. She worked in team and independent environments building government and commercial simulations, video arcade games, post production for television, advertising and video production before deciding on a drastic change. Having an affinity for photography for quite some time, she yearned to incorporate that with experimental projects she had been imaging for over a decade. In 2006 she embarked on a journey to blend her commercial and production experience with real concepts and ideas in technique and content. A major milestone was reached for Beth in 2010, being accepted into a juried studio program for professional artists at Studio 18 in Pembroke Pines. Beth shares that leaving the advertising world was one of the best things to happen to her. “While it was a challenging transition, I learned a great deal about having confidence in my own voice. Something I had lost for a time communicating other people’s stories”. Her work now starts with her own story and that story is often woven through the entire process of making the art. Something as simple in appearance as a water drop or flower is very much a conscious capture of a moment in time that reaches back into her roots as an animator. “I constantly view life in frames now. It’s one of those things that, for me, once I got a glimpse behind the curtain I couldn’t go back. That is something I share in the art that I make, whether it is apparent or not, it’s there.”

  • Lori Arbel Arbel
    Lori Arbel Arbel
Visual Artist; Creativity Coach, Teaching Artist
I am an artist, Florida state-certified teacher, and creative life coach guiding young adults through personal journeys of self-discovery and, often, the discovery of their own creative talents. My passion to create innovative mixed-media art and photography – and to help others bring out their own inner artists - has led me to teach in NYC and South Florida schools and community spaces for 18 years. Whether finding my own inner-expression in art or helping my students do the same, I try always to offer a positive, energetic perspective. I’ve been pursuing my own artistic muse since early-childhood.  Later in life, I discovered that artistic expression could be a tool to heal. In college, I used art to work through the anger and pain of my Mom's death. Later on, after the difficult birth of my daughter, I used art to sort through the emotional challenges and creative shutdown that followed. It was then that I was affected most profoundly by its power to heal. And it was then that I started teaching others how art could be used for healing in stressful situations. And how it can actually promote inner happiness and well-being. To read more stories visit my blog.

Atria’s newest series, Chapter 2: They’re Trying Their Best, is made possible with support from the Broward County Cultural Division through a grant she received in 2021. The series is an expansion of her previous series Messy Hair, Messy Hearts. This new series focuses on the next phase of the feminine. These female portraits do not represent any woman in particular, rather Atria finds herself in each of the personified characters. She invents and documents these women in a desire to process past traumas and better understand herself. Chapter 2 is an elaboration of her previous portraits creating a further dialogue of the individual’s internal and external struggle to be. The characters represented in this series intuitively tell stories which she hopes allow the viewer to achieve a sense of healing and self-definition on a larger scale and more active expression. She is partnering with multi-instrumentalist and producer tiny.blips and Inner Ocean Records to create original music and video collages based on the series.
