Actor, Director, Playwright and Community Activist
Anthony R. (Tony) Thompson was a founding member of the Vinnette Carroll Repertory Company in 1985 in Fort Lauderdale and served as an actor, director, general manager and board member until the year 2000. As an associate and protégé of Broadway Director, Vinnette Carroll he learned much including how to invent the twenty-fifth hour. Tony began his involvement with theatre is Broward County by co-founding and as executive director of the Black Renaissance Theatre, Inc. in 1980. He was director in residence, co-executive director and board member of Wo/man’s Showcase, Inc. (which became the Ann White Theatre and later the White-Willis Theatre) in Fort Lauderdale from 1983 until 1988.
Most recently he concentrated his energies to telling African American stories and has written the following plays: “Echoes Through The MGM Seasons: Mangos, Guavas & Mullet”, 2011; “Bravely We Sat Down, Fearlessly We Marched!”, 2011; “Fearless: Harry T. Moore”, 2009; “Unto This Hour”, 2008; “Men Of The Harlem Renaissance”, 2006; “The Middle Passage And Beyond”, 2005; “Just Us: From Bean Pickers To Presidents”, 2003 and “Frederick Douglass: A Trumpet For Freedom”, 2001.
