In HELLO, MY NAME IS DORIS, the perfectly cast two time Oscar winner Sally Field is Doris Miller, a painfully shy and eccentric woman of a certain age who, after a lifetime of being overlooked and ignored, finds her world turned upside down by John, her company’s much younger, handsome new art director (Max Greenfield, the sexy heartthrob from television’s “New Girl”). When a self-help seminar inspires her to take a chance on love, sparks fly, at least for Doris. It’s a comedy of errors both hilarious and bittersweet.
In the cluttered house she shared with her late mother, Doris mines the Internet for information on her one-and-only, guided by the 13-year-old granddaughter of her best pal Roz, played by the great Tyne Daly, from “Cagney & Lacey.” Doris begins showing up at John’s regular haunts, winning over his Williamsburg friends with her quirky naiveté, including John’s girlfriend (Beth Behrs, star of television’s “2 Broke Girls”). She catches the eye of a hip rock band fronted by the real life pop star Jack Antonoff (from the groups Bleachers and Fun), who want her to model for their next album cover in her unironic vintage clothes.
Her new life brings Doris a thrilling perspective, but also creates a rift between her and her longtime friends and family, who believe she’s making a fool of herself over a guy half her age. Eager for all the experiences she has missed out on, Doris throws caution to the wind and follows her heart for the very first time, with both unexpected and expected consequences, in this witty and compassionate late-life coming-of-age-story.
