Aletheia - A Photographic Monograph, by Katherine Agurcia

Katherine Agurcia is a visual artist based in Hollywood, FL. For the last 15 years, she has exhibited work in a variety of group and solo shows, in online and print publications, and has taught photography and graphic design at various universities. A 2023 grantee of the Broward Cultural Division’s artist grant program, Katherine is excited to showcase her work to Broward residents and visitors, and further expand the reach of art within the community. The venue, the Orange Villa on the grounds of the Old Davie School Historical Museum, has significant potential as a gallery/display/presentation partner to local artists, and it is also her hope that this exhibition encourages other artists to showcase their work publicly at this location.

In this stand-alone collection, Katherine used the physical medium of photography to explore the process of memory in the human mind. Taking from previously-learned or inferred visual cues, out of focus, blurred or non-traditional images are brought into focus in a process of  “un-concealment.” The works seek to collectively challenge the viewer to explore the feelings and associations that arise from an abstract image in the same way that a loosely remembered memory can.
