The Amazing Vojtech Kubašta: A Showcase of His Pop-up and Illustrated Children's Books will be on display from July 18, 2014 thru January 16, 2015 at the Bienes Museum of the Modern Book, located at the Broward County Main Library, 6th Floor, 100 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301.
This exhibition celebrates the centennial of Kubašta's birth and showcases his pop-up and children’s illustrated books. Over 100 of his pieces will be displayed, ranging from fairy tales to books on counting, history, circus, technology and animals. The Amazing Vojtech Kubašta will transport you to a place filled with wonder and magic.
Born in Austria, Kubašta spent his childhood and adult life in Czechoslovakia. He lived in Prague where he studied architecture, designed puppet theater scenery and costumes and worked as a book illustrator and paper engineer. His illustrated books for children and adults featured an imaginative use of color that offered unexpected delights. Although Kubašta designed a wide variety of graphic materials, he is primarily known for his movable or pop-up books.
Movable books are often called pop-ups and have moving parts that are set in motion by turning pages and manipulating paper tabs, levers, and wheels. It is especially his work with the classic fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen that he makes a noteworthy contribution to the field of children’s literature.
