International film festival sensation, winner of the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight award, and Foreign Language Oscar nominee, Colombia’s EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT (EL ABRAZO DE LA SERPIENTE) is at once blistering and poetic, a trip in many senses of that word. The story centers on Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and the last survivor of his people, and the two scientists who, over the course of 40 years, build a friendship with him. The film was inspired by the real-life journals of two explorers who traveled through the Colombian Amazon during the last century in search of the sacred and difficult-to-find psychedelic Yakruna plant. The ravages of colonialism, the stunning beauty of the landscape, and the clash of very different world views create a potent brew in this stunningly filmed black-and-white masterpiece that takes you into the heart of the forest and its indigenous cultures.
