On Wednesday, May 14, 2014, the Broward Cultural Division will host two back-to-back regional convenings: Arts Education: Policy, Equity and Action (2-5 p.m.) and Cultivating South Florida’s Dance Community (5:30-8 p.m.).
The convenings will bring together stakeholders from diverse backgrounds and organizations, representing a range of perspectives. These gatherings are designed to generate ideas and action beyond what a single individual is able to imagine or achieve on their own.
These convenings have been made possible through national, state and local collaborators including Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts; American Dance Legacy Initiative at Brown University; ArtServe; Arts for Learning Miami; Bak Middle School of the Arts; Ballet Brika West African Dance Theatre; Body and Soul Dance Theatre; Brazz Dance; Broward County Board of County Commissioners; Broward Cultural Council; Children’s Services Council of Broward County; Florida Dance Education Organization; Jayadevi Arts, Inc.; Kravis Center for the Performing Arts; Power of Performance; the School Board of Broward County; and VSA Florida.

VSA Florida Hand ‘n Hand School Residencies Program
Hand 'n Hand is a three-part program comprised of classroom instruction, collaborative creativity and public exhibition. This school residency program pairs a teaching artist with an artist with a disability. The program provides an opportunity for the artist with a disability to work in their field, to be a mentor for their audience and to showcase teaching strategies for the inclusion of all. Art works from these residencies are highlighted in a final exhibition in their respective county. Residency availability is based on funding.

VSA Florida (VSAFL) is a state affiliate of VSA, an affiliate of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. VSA arts was first known as Very Special Arts. The FL affiliate was begun in 1981 by the Florida Department of Education and the Florida Department of State and was housed at FSU. The state office moved to USF, Tampa in 1996. VSAFL now offers programs/activities for all 67 FL counties. VSAFL provides programs in: cultural access, services for adult artists with disabilities, outreach and exhibitions, professional development, community programs, and artists in residence.

Darby Hayes, M. Ed., has an over thirty-year background in professional training and development, integrated arts program design, and coalescing key stakeholders around a unified vision. Ms. Hayes is founder and director of the Power of Performance®, which offers a diverse curriculum of integrated strategies drawn from educational technology, human resource development, psychology, and the arts. She has conducted workforce trainings for private, nonprofit and corporate interests; serves as private coach and consultant to a variety of arts and humanities projects and has presented at major conferences; she is one of a select few chosen by The Kennedy Center to lead their Arts as Education workshops for teachers. She has coordinated local, regional and national meetings.
Ms. Hayes directs the Art Works! Partnership Initiative in collaboration with The Miami Coalition for a Safe and Drug-Free Community, its affiliates, and the Florida Department of Children and Families, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Program Office. This community outreach initiative is focused on building and sustaining community service partnerships and their application of evidence based practices to arts integrated prevention.
Kravis Center for the Performing Arts
The Kravis Center has received national recognition for its education programs, which have become a model for other performing arts centers around the country. In January 2007, the Palm Beach County Cultural Council honored the Kravis Center with the inaugural Muse Award for Arts Education in recognition of the comprehensive arts education programs that are so vital to the Kravis Center’s mission of enhancing the quality of life in Palm Beach County. The Center has remained steadfast in its commitment to arts education during the last 18 years as evidenced by the more than 1.1 million children who have attended a S*T*A*R (Students and Teachers Arts Resource) Series performance, made possible in part by The Picower Foundation. The flagship of the Kravis Center’s educational programs, the S*T*A*R Series serves tens of thousands of school children annually, introducing young minds to the wonder of the performing arts, many of them for the very first time.

Piper Weber Roth is a programs manager at the Children’s Services Council of Broward County (CSC). The mission of the CSC is to empower Broward’s children to become responsible, productive adults capable of realizing their full potential, their hopes and their dreams. Since being created by the voters of Broward County in 2000, the CSC has funded hundreds of programs that serve children and families in Broward County. Piper oversees the implementation of funding for transitional programming for older youth with disabilities and youth development programming for middle-school-aged youth. She has extensive experience and knowledge in working with diverse learners and currently serves on the Broward County Arts Education Committee which works to strengthen the community’s arts education coalition with the School Board of Broward County, artists, and community partners. Piper serves as an advocate for the arts and sees the arts as an integral part of educating and supporting children and youth to learn and grow.

Arts for Learning (A4L) is an arts-in-education nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing teaching and learning through the arts and community cultural resources. As one of Miami's leading sources of arts-in-education services, A4L provides quality arts-based programs that connect the arts to other core-curriculum subjects to support academic achievement and child development. All A4L programs teach life and communication skills, support literacy and problem solving skills, foster self-discovery, and build self-esteem.
Their comprehensive services include teacher professional development, multimedia classroom resources, and community arts instruction and programming. These services are delivered to over 13,000 students in more than 100 schools, early learning centers, after-school programs and summer camps throughout Miami-Dade County.

Bak Middle School of the Arts (Bak MSOA), an arts magnet middle school, is the largest total magnet middle school in Palm Beach County, Florida serving 1360 students. The school works towards making sure the academic and arts curriculums reflect a real world perspective and that the students will maintain high standards through a strong arts program that enriches their lives and enhances academic achievement, develops creative thinking and analytical skills and embraces reading.
The Florida Dance Education Organization, an affiliate of NDEO, envisions a state where every citizen gets equal access and opportunity to quality dance arts education regardless of gender, age, race, culture, or socio-economic status, ability or interest. It is a growing organization that provides several kinds of services and information for dance educators. Each year in October, FDEO presents educators' conference featuring guest presenters, roundtable discussions, networking sessions, and a performance by the National Honor Society of Dance Arts Florida Chapters. In addition to the conference, FDEO is the State Affiliate for the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA).

American Dance Legacy Initiative (ADLI)
ADLI transforms how people think about and experience dance through collaborative programming that connects with American heritage and builds a dance literate public.
ADLI produces innovative materials and programs designed to engage artists, educators, and the general public with participatory viewing and dancing experiences that connect with American heritage, building a dance literate public. Founded in 1993 by dance pioneers Carolyn Adams and Julie Adams Strandberg, ADLI is housed at Brown University’s John Nicholas Brown Center for Public Humanities and Cultural Heritage to strengthen a shared commitment to public engagement with the arts and culture. Operating on a project-by-project basis, ADLI partners with a broad, geographically diverse network of organizations, inter-generational practitioners, and dance enthusiasts to carry out activities on Brown’s campus and in communities across the nation.
