Black Empires and Kingdom of Haiti

On Wednesday, May 6, 2015 from 5 to 7PM, internationally known artist Alexandra Barbot will open her month-long art exhibit, “Black Empires and Kingdom of Haiti, W.I.” at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC).

For the first time in Broward County, the artist will showcase works that illustrate her book Tell Me About Haiti. The paintings depict the history of the Island of Haiti from the time of the Queen and Kings of the Tainos—at the time of the discovery of the island—to the prestigious kingdom of Henry Christophe in the northern part of the island. The paintings will also depict the empire of Jean Jacques, the 1st former General Dessaline, who cut all ties of the island with France and renamed the former French colony St. Dominque, Haiti in 1803, a little known fact of Black history.
