And the Band Played On: Politics, People, and the AIDS Epidemic is a 1987 book written by San Francisco Chronicle journalist Randy Shilts. It was first comprehensive history of AIDS.
In 1993, HBO released the film version entitled, And the Band Played On, that followed medical, political, and personal responses to AIDS as it unfolded in the early 1980s.
