2022 Irish Film Festival

Presented by NSU Alvin Sherman Library at Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center

The Alvin Sherman Library and the NSU Center for Applied Humanities will sponsor the annual South Florida Irish Film Festival. This film series allows the community to see independent contemporary Irish films not widely released in the U.S. The festival was the brainchild of Professor David Kilroy, a native of Ireland and a faculty member in the college of Arts, Humanities and Sciences. Working with the Irish Film Institute in Dublin, Professor Kilroy has been able to secure a wide array of films over the years, from cutting edge dramas to hard-nosed documentaries, representing the work of some of Ireland’s most exciting filmmakers. This year’s lineup includes one documentary and two feature length films.

The festival begins on Tuesday, November 15th with the spectacular performance-based documentary Steps of Freedom, which follows the evolution of Irish dance from humble origins to its present-day global phenomenon. The screening will open with a live performance by the Drake School of Irish Dance.

On Thursday, November 17th the second in the lineup is the award-winning film, Arracht. This film tells the story of a fisherman living on the wild shores of Connemara as the Great Hunger of the 1840s occurs.

The festival concludes on Sunday, November 20th with Redemption of a Rogue. The story depicts disheveled Jimmy Cullen who returns to Co Cavan after seven years of exile to make peace with his dying father and seek redemption for past sins before he too bids this world farewell.
