"For the past 10 years, I have been fascinated with the way people present themselves as authentic. As an Afro-Caribbean American female, role playing is at the center of my identity. We are taught from a young age the “correct” and “dangerous” way of behaving. We are taught how to adjust ourselves through speech or appearance in “respect” for others and how to perform in different scenarios. We are taught how and when to wear the masks. W.E.B. Dubois’ theory of double consciousness might come to mind.
Code-switching is not only about language in this exhibition. It is about the fluidity of gender, nationality, privilege and of course, dialect. Growing up in a Dominican household in South Florida has given me a unique perspective of otherness – in all forms. The individuals represented in this space, as well as all of us here, are performing a code. This is what influences and fuels my work. Let’s switch."
