An exhibit of Broward Artist Andrea Huffman’s textiles and mixed media artworks based on her observations of the birds of South Florida.
Through her observations and encounters with many of the species of birds that are found in South Florida , Andrea Huffman uses her art to address the human impact on our environment. Huffman uses a variety of media and techniques to illustrate the uniqueness of the various birds represented in her work. In her textile pieces she uses the meticulous process of "thread painting", which consists using the sewing machine to build dense layers of colored threads to create her images. The exhibit also includes a variety of works on paper, including linoleum block prints, embossing, monotypes and lithography. There is also a series of bird "vignettes", small shadow boxes with the birds printed on fabric, combined with collage elements that related to each of the birds represented.
Accompanying many of the pieces Huffman includes text in the form of scientific "field notes", some with historical information about the decline or survival of a particular bird, scientific research, or even simple suggestions of what we as citizens can do to enjoy the birds around us and encourage a healthy environment. As with scientific research, the viewer can see the artist's process through many of her preliminary drawings.
There will also be several community events in conjunction with the exhibit, that will be free to the public.
This exhibit and events are made possible with support from the Broward Cultural Division
