Memories and Myths / Memorias y Mitos Exhibition by Alejandra Abad Pompano Beach Cultural Center

Presented by City of Pompano Beach at Pompano Beach Cultural Center

In reflecting on my own experiences of memory, place, land, and home, these works also connect to our relationship with ecology and environmental futures. I use organic materials, sculptural elements, collage, and printmaking techniques to create animations that represent transformation and cycles of impermanence. My content has historic roots in anticolonial movements that are tied to international surrealism and magical realism, particularly from South America and the Caribbean.

About Alejandra Abad

Alejandra Abad was born in Venezuela and partially raised in Florida. Her style is informed by architectural studies at FAU, by Film, Video, and New Media at SAIC, and by Interdisciplinary Media Arts Practices at CU Boulder. She experiments with multimedia, site-specific installations, and handmade materials while examining access, borders, and boundaries. She refers to memories of her upbringing while visually depicting transformations that come with migration and hybrid identity. Her animations and moving images often feature fragmentation, folklore, and mythology. By mixing personal experience with socio-political critiques, whether they are tied to her homeland, new homes, ecology and environmental futures.
