Said Through Glass is a 2018 JEAN FELDMAN POETRY PRIZE WINNER
Debut poetry collection by Jona Colson along with poet Gregg Shapiro
Colson’s poetry asks the reader to reconsider ordinary life as something curious, even fantastic. In a collection that illuminates both the public and private self, Colson leads us from grief to healing, giving voice to what normally goes unsaid. From fanciful, imaginary dialogues to sorrow over a father's death to a lyric sequence based on Velazquez' Las Meninas, in which the subjects of the famous painting speak, Colson shows himself to be a young poet of astonishing, apparently limitless range — sometimes whimsical, sometimes terrifying, but always contemplative, delicate, and wise.
Jona Colson’s first poetry collection, Said Through Glass, won the 2018 Jean Feldman Poetry Prize from the Washington Writers’ Publishing House. His poems have appeared in Ploughshares, The Southern Review, The Massachusetts Review and elsewhere. His translations and interviews can be found in Prairie Schooner, Tupelo Quarterly, and The Writer’s Chronicle. He is an associate professor of ESL at Montgomery College in Maryland and lives in Washington, DC.
Gregg Shapiro is the author of seven books including the 2019 chapbooks, Sunshine State (NightBallet Press) and More Poems About Buildings and Food (Souvenir Spoon Books).
An entertainment journalist, whose interviews and reviews run in a variety of regional LGBT and mainstream publications and websites, Shapiro lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with his husband Rick and their dog Coco.
