Girls' Club and writer-in-residence Laura McDermott Matheric presents a series of two-day writing workshops in partnership with Reading Queer, focusing on the deconstructed elements of story telling and how it may be applied for poetic uses. Each workshop includes a Thursday lecture/discussion session and a Saturday workshop.
Series one, March 19 & 28 - The Moment: Decoding Instances - discusses poems which capture a solitary moment in order to reveal a deeper story, looking at work by poets Elizabeth Bishop, Tony Hoagland, John Berryman, Stacy Waite, Federico Garcia Lorca and others to see how these poets demonstrate the concentration on picturing the moment in order to tell a deeper story about the world around them. Through carefully crafted examinations of poems that showcase the importance of encapsulating a single moment onto the page, we’ll explore how poetry can unravel layers in the mundane things in life. This workshop, Decoding Instances, will examine characters and the relationships they build from the perspective of one episode in life.
In addition to these close readings and critiques, some time will be dedicated to short in-class writing exercises to help each of us break out of well-worn writing routines and strategies. Session one of the workshop will include discussion, examples and in-class writing, whereas the second session will include workshop of students’ work.
This workshop is session one of a three part series.
