How can we make the outdoors a space of belonging? Preservation of our natural environment and the fight against climate change will only be successful if there is racial equity in the movement. Historically, Black, Indigenous, People of Color and other marginalized voices have been devalued and suppressed in environmental conversations. AIRIE believes artists have the communicative ability to lead society to a more inclusive and just future. Over the course of the 2022 season AIRIE is investigating how we can make the outdoors a space of belonging. We ask you, the artist, to engage with this theme and the natural world through your artistic practice as we build new paths forward.

AIRIE’s mission, in partnership with the Everglades National Park, is to empower artists to think creatively and critically about their relationship to the environment with a mission of revealing new paths forward. 

Over the past 20 years, Artists in Residence in Everglades has welcomed over 185 artists, writers, curators, choreographers, musicians and other creatives to its residency program, permeating the national and international art landscape with unique interpretations and stories of the Everglades. 

In a new structure for our residency, and to promote greater accessibility to people from diverse backgrounds, AIRIE is increasing the grant award and support given to its Fellows. AIRIE is inviting yearlong participation and connection between the selected Fellows with opportunities to connect, share research, and incubate ideas amongst each other. Each Fellow is offered a $4000 research grant, institutional support from AIRIE’s network and partners, and a month-long residency in the Everglades National Park (with additional financial support for travel and food). In return the artists share their work and experience in the Everglades through public conversations, digital platforms, writing, and/or public viewing of artwork created during or resulting from their residency. The artists are also asked to prepare a presentation on their year-long research that will be delivered at the annual AIRIE Environment + Art Summit in December during Miami Art Week of each year.

The AIRIE Environment + Art Summit is a new program that connects thought leaders in the arts, science and cultural spheres to share research, findings and art works produced. The inaugural Environment + Art Summit in December 2021 will feature discussions, workshops, and a keynote address centered around the 2022 season theme:How can we make the outdoors a space of belonging? At the end of the season, AIRIE Fellows are invited back to Miami and the Everglades to present their residency work and contribute to panel discussions at the Summit.

Who is eligible?
AIRIE invites emerging or professional artists, writers, curators, choreographers, musicians and other creatives who want to contribute to the interpretation and communication of environmental themes through the inspiring nature of Everglades National Park.

• Emerging or Professional artists in any artistic discipline, including (but not limited to) visual, performing, literary arts
• 21+ Years of Age
• Pursuing research & development stage of artistic project/explorations
• Eligible to travel to the United States*
