Call for Artists

High school students residing in Broward County are invited to participate in the 2017 Mayor’s Art Competition hosted by Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief with the assistance of Broward County’s Cultural Division. The event is a county-wide art competition that gives students the opportunity to showcase their talent for the benefit of a local charitable organization. Winning artworks will be recognized by the Mayor for artistic excellence and auctioned at the Mayor’s Gala on October 21, 2017. Proceeds of the auction will go to the Mayor’s selected charity.
Competition Guidelines

Each student may submit up to two entries. To enter, students only need to submit a completed online application and digital images of their artwork. The artwork can be in any 2-dimentional medium, of any size (winners must provide matted artwork), and depict any theme suitable for public display as determined at the sole discretion of the County. Students who will be in grades 9-12 starting on August 21, 2017, attending public, private, or home school are eligible to apply. The artwork must be original in concept, design, and execution and may not violate any U.S. copyright laws. Reproductions, copies or derivate artwork will not be accepted. There will be one winner for each of the nine County commission districts. The winning artworks will be on display at a silent auction being held as part of the Mayor’s Gala being held on October 21, 2017 and will not be returned.
Guidelines for Winners

The Cultural Division will notify the winning artists who, upon request, will submit the original artwork for display and auction at the Mayor’s Gala. The artwork must be matted and will not be returned.
Accepted mediums:

Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.

Drawings: colored pencil, pencil, ink, marker, pastels, charcoal (It is recommended that charcoal and pastel drawings be fixed.)

Collages: must be two-dimensional

Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints

Mixed Media: use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.

Submission Guidelines

Artwork submissions should be uploaded to Submittable.com no later than August 14, 2017. A link can be found on the Cultural Division’s website http://www.broward.org/Arts/PublicArt/Pages/Calls.aspx or https://browardcountyculturaldivision.submittable.com/submit

There will be up to nine winners, one per County Commission District, who will be notified in early September, 2017. Winners will be required to deliver their original matted artwork to the Cultural Division, 100 S. Andrews Ave, 6th Floor, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301 no later than October 6, 2017.
