Broward County’s Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and the Broward Cultural Division recently announced the latest Terminal 2 Art Gallery exhibition featuring photography by artist Russell Satterthwaite.

A resident of Fort Lauderdale, Satterthwaite is an internationally-recognized award-winning wildlife photographer whose bold, large-scale images depict the ever-changing landscapes and underwater beauty of Florida’s natural environment. The exhibition opened June 17 and will be on display through December 2022. The Terminal 2 Art Gallery is located on the departures level post-security, and encompasses the north and south passenger hold rooms, which serve seven of the airport’s passenger gates.

Focusing on Florida nature, the north hold room portion of the exhibit includes Satterthwaite’s masterfully-composed photographs of native flora, and the south hold room showcases his vividly-colored images of native fauna. Included are thrilling, close-up views of some of Florida’s most iconic wildlife, such as the American alligator, yellowfin tuna, and blue land crab.

Among the artworks on view is a photograph titled Stumpy, which depicts a mysterious-looking cypress tree that appears to float in the surrounding water. “Every year I visit the same spot on the St. Johns River in northern Florida to photograph this tree,” Satterthwaite said. “The area is remote and accessible only by boat, and on this particular morning, as I waited for the sun to come up, in rolled the fog and this is the end result.”

“Supporting the local arts community is a priority for Broward Cultural Division,” notes Phil Dunlap, the Division’s Director. “The Terminal 2 Art Gallery provides our region’s local artists with exceptional opportunities to further their artistic careers and have their artworks seen by millions of travelers each year.”

– Phil Dunlap, the Broward Cultural Division’s Director

“Florida’s nature and landscapes are extraordinary,” said Mark Gale, FLL CEO/Director of Aviation. “Bringing these elements into our terminals through photographs captured by a local artist is a great way of welcoming our guests to FLL and reminding them that they have arrived to a tropical paradise.”

The Terminal 2 Art Gallery showcases the work of regional professional artists via temporary exhibitions that rotate every six months. For information about the gallery, contact ArtFLL@broward.org.
