As a lead-up to June Pride Month and the 50th Anniversary of Stonewall, NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale will present A Sense of Pride: Visual Activists and New Identities, a one-day symposium exploring issues within the LGBTQ+ art community on May 18.

This symposium will feature two panel discussions, including one with artists who identify as queer individuals of color in America. The symposium is open to the public with free admission and will include panel discussions, workshops and art performances with national and local artists, curators and activists. Featured panelists will discuss issues of identity, representation and race as they pertain to their LGBTQ+ communities and experiences.

 

The Symposium schedule is as follows:

 

11 AM – 1 PM Visual Activists: American Art and the AIDS Crisis
Featured Speakers: Roberto Juarez, Kia LaBeija, Alex Fiahlo, Dr. Requel Lopes | A panel discussion focusing on the role of LGBTQ+ art in America’s HIVAIDS crisis from the 1980s to the present, and how it has promoted critical awareness through visual activism.

 

1 – 3 PM Performances
Rosemarie Romero | Porn Nail$ Salon, an interactive Miami-based installation and performance project that functions as a mobile queer-feminist nail salon

Roberto Navarrete | a ritualistic healing practice that reflects the physical, emotional, and spiritual scarring caused by global intolerance towards the LGBTQ community.

The Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus

3 – 5 PM New Identities: Queer Black and Latin-X Artists in America
Featured Speakers: Naima Green, Roberto Navarrete, GeoVanna Gonzalez and Najja Moon

 

A Sense of Pride: Visual Activists and New Identities takes place Saturday, May 18, 2019 from 11 AM – 5 PM at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale (One East Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale 33301).
