It took three architects to construct the Leaning Tower of Pisa, noted Broward County Commissioner Beam Furr. The City of Hallandale Beach managed to design a mural by committee, a similar, if not more difficult task. “The City is to be commended,” he said. “The mural actually ended up looking good and there’s no leaning.”
Commissioner Furr’s jocular remarks were part of the mural dedication held at the Hallandale Beach City Commission meeting on January 6th. The recently-completed mural was a cooperative project of the City of Hallandale Beach and Broward County’s Cultural Division. The new artwork, painted on the Hallandale Beach Boulevard Bridge crossing Highway AIA, is one of several public art projects sponsored by the County in celebration of Broward’s 100th Anniversary.
Renowned West Palm Beach muralist Eduardo Mendieta was selected to design the artwork, but was required to first solicit citizen input. Following a series of community gatherings, Mendieta submitted designs to the City Commission. They chose “Beneath the Surface,” featuring images of a 1,400-foot manatee and baby calf swimming amid blue and green water.
Though the mural is completed, community involvement continues with a children’s “Name-the-Manatees” Contest. The winner from the 180 names submitted will be announced soon.
