Look closely at “A Living History,” the Broward 100 mural painted by Andrew Reid at the Old Davie School, and you will see a schoolteacher with a book open in front of her, as if she is reading a story to a child.

The words are inspired by a memoir “Please Remember, Mama” by Norma Hammer Albury, who moved to Davie with her parents and 10 brothers and sisters in 1913.

In her memoir, Albury writes “I often wonder what Mama’s first thoughts were as she looked at her new home in Florida.”

An abbreviated version of this passage is featured on the mural. Reid called Albury’s memoir’s “key to my understanding” of the early days of Davie.

And he also spoke at length with Albury’s niece Barbara McCall, who also grew up in Davie and was a key figure in getting the Old Davie School placed on the National Historic Register.

I just loved it from the start,” McCall says of Reid’s mural depicting Davie’s past and present. “And when you look up there and see your own history that makes it special.”
