Unlike the other Broward County VisualEYES murals, Bill Savarese’s Reflections isn’t set within a residential or commercial area. The mural is in Port Everglades, a busy industrial cruise and cargo port closed to the general public. If fact, you have to pass through a security checkpoint to reach it, but only if you have a business reason to be at the port.

The mural will be enjoyed by the 4 million people a year who take cruises from Port Everglades and the 11,700 people work at the port, the majority of whom live in Broward County. “A little city works here everyday,” says Peg Buchan, Assistant Port Director at Port Everglades.

The abstract, aquatic-themed mural stands out among the colorless, industrial buildings. Until Savarese painted Reflections on the Amman Building’s facade, the office building was as drab as its surroundings. “The building was beige and didn’t have a lot of character,” says Buchan.

The swirling composition of blues, greens and purples are painted on twin walls that flank the building’s entrance, with the colors gradating along the vertical walls. The bold colors and free-form shapes contrast with the grey, industrial buildings nearby and, at the same time, reflect the vibrancy of the sky and water surrounding the port.
