DRAGON BOAT RACING IN HOLLYWOOD

At Topeekegee Yugnee Park in Hollywood, Florida, athletic enthusiasts assemble on Saturday morning to take part in the only dragon boat racing in Broward County. Each team is decked out in spirited colors, huddled under their tents, and patiently awaiting their turn as other competitors paddle fast out on the water.

The red dragon team stands in a circle, led by their captain doing jumping jacks, woo-hooing, and leading them in a “Go Team!” cheer. And this is just the warm-up.

Two boats come in, beautifully painted in bright colors with a painted dragon head at the top of the canoe. Each team paddles their hearts out, and then it’s announced: “Team number one has done it! They are the winner!” Fans stand along the water’s edge on the grassy shore cheering, dogs are barking, and children are chasing each other with glee.

Even though the competitors look like they could run twenty miles with no problem, the event is free and open to anyone who wants to race. Each team behaves like family, with claps on the back for support, hugs for a job well done, and family and friends to cheer them on from the sidelines.
