If you follow artist Ruben Ubiera on social media, you’ll see updates on his murals, videos of him painting, and plates of what he’s eating (it looks delicious). But you may not get a sense of the challenges Ubiera faces when painting a large mural like Lady Justice.
“The last days are usually the hardest,” Ubiera said. “I’m very, very tired. Every day, I’m having less sleep, less food.”
He doesn’t distract himself with thoughts of what he could have done differently. If it didn’t happen, it wasn’t meant to. Instead, he keeps moving.
“What drives you to finish it is having your idea come to life,” Ubiera said. “Every stroke that makes you more tired finishes the piece even more.”
“Sometimes you just can’t, but one more stroke in the eyebrow at the top,” he offered as an example, “that’s what’s going to give the piece dimensionality. Or you can pack up your things and go.”
And when he finishes, Ubiera doesn’t have the energy to say much. “Ubiera out,” he often posts along with a picture of his finished mural. Then, he’s on to the next one.
