Miami Beach’s contemporary art museum presents mid-career and established contemporary artists, through changing exhibitions and a robust permanent collection. The exhibition program encompasses a wide range of media and artistic points of view that bring new thought to the diverse cultural context of Miami Beach.

The historic and newly renovated Art Deco space also houses an education facility, cafe by Thierry Isambert and museum shop.

Central to the museum’s mission, The Bass maintains a vigorous education program for lifelong learning and visitors of all ages. The Bass IDEAS education initiative uses art as a catalyst for creativity and positive growth, especially in the area of early childhood education. The active school program led by the City of Miami Beach called STEAM+, takes The Bass IDEAS off-site by engaging children in Miami-Dade County Public Schools and integrating arts education into the curriculum.

  • SHEILA HICKS: CAMPO ABIERTO On View Through September 29, 2019 Grouping works of art from various periods, Campo Abierto (Open Field) explores the formal, social and environmental aspects of landscape that have been present, yet rarely examined, throughout Sheila Hicks’ expansive career. Prompting contemplations on collaboration, dialogue and discussion, the exhibition is rooted in the reconfiguration of Escalade Beyond Chromatic Lands (2016-2017), the artist’s vast installation produced for the Arsenale at the Venice Biennale in 2017. The exhibition brings together several large-format installations, as well as more intimately-scaled works, that utilize and transform the architecture of The Bass’ upstairs galleries. The selection of works in Campo Abierto (Open Field) foreground the museum’s context in South Florida, a multilingual locus traversed by complex immigration waves and patterns, alongside environmental concerns.
