9MUSES ART CENTER - MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT AND RECOVERY We are a program of The Mental Health Association of Southeast Florida designed to provide adults with mental health issues an opportunity to participate in fine arts classes with recovery workshops, and groups to support mental health and wellness. Participants may choose from a broad array of visual and performing arts. Classes and personalized instruction along with individual studio time allow members to create according to his/her own personal “muse”. Members can engage in stimulating activity, free from the stigma of mental illness. Support groups for depression, anxiety disorder, bipolar depression, and schizophrenia are held weekly. 9Muses has been promoting mental health awareness throughout the community for over twenty years and functions successfully as a peer-run organization. Members are free to come and go, and participate in any class they wish or sit and enjoy coffee and conversation with other members. Positive interaction promotes self-empowerment and increases mental health awareness and strengthens individual recovery. PROGRAM HISTORY In 1994, a mental health art center was inspired by a phone call to the Consumer Affairs Director from a case manager who was concerned about a client ready for discharge from the state hospital. The individual was a talented artist and only wanted to do art. Meetings were initiated with local consumers who were artists or those interested in the arts to solicit their suggestions. The Department of Children & Families was persuaded to fund a drop-in center with a focus on the arts, called Hot Sketch Studios. After a year and a half, attendance was low and the sponsoring agency chose not to continue service. In October 1996, the Mental Health Association of Southeast FL, which had been selected by the Hot Sketch members, agreed to sponsor the program. The name was changed to 9Muses Art Center and since then membership and attendance have increased to over 4,000 members. The Center is a working art studio. Many diverse workshops are offered each month along with outings and social events. 9Muses artists have exhibited in public libraries, corporate buildings, government agencies, and psychiatric units, participated in community events & exhibits, developed ongoing relations to exhibit at local businesses, showcased during luncheons and special events that further our mission and our own Gallery & Frame Shop provides continual opportunities for members to exhibit at a variety of community events. Our members have been commissioned to produce murals for a number of hospital crisis units and the state hospital. We are on the internet as part of the Mental Health Association of Southeast Florida and our support and wellness meetings, projects, activities, and artworks are facilitated by many of our artists. In addition to fine arts classes (drawing, acrylics, watercolor, charcoal, pastels, etc.) there are lessons in guitar, piano, percussion, and voice. Classes in poetry, creative writing, drama, dance, clay, ceramics, potter’s wheel, hand building, jewelry making, woodworking, computers, as well as outings and social events, recovery workshops and self-help support groups. Artistic expression and community integration at 9Muses promote understanding and acceptance both for those with mental illness and for those without. Together with our members, we make a difference, challenging stigma, embracing expression and, creating opportunity via the arts. 9Muses Frame Shop provides personalized, quality service designed to provide framing and preserving your cherished artwork, photographs, even keepsakes, a simple and rewarding pleasure. All of our trained artisans work closely with you to choose the elements that will make your vision a beautifully finished piece. We carry a large selection of molding samples from a variety of companies. We also carry a full line of acid-free mats from Crescent. A 20% discount is offered to 9Muses & MHA membership.

Kay Kiria Painter - Poet “I Paint to tell a story. I write to paint imagery. Bringing the unseen and unspoken to a heartfelt surface drives my passion to paint and write. Drawing our attention away from the physical into the spiritual heart and light inspires the devotion behind my work. My paintings and poems are a poured offering built from within. Oil, acrylic, mixed media, tools and my penned poems in journals are the creative instruments I use to orchestrate works of imagination, closeness, honesty and hope.” ~ Kay Kiria Miami, Florida born, Kay Kiria is a lifelong artist and poet. Kiria has been on the South Florida cultural scene since 1997, exhibiting in galleries and exhibitions from the Keys to Boca Raton. Her work resides in private collections internationally. She has appeared in the press consistently throughout her career as artist, teacher and involvement in community art projects. Kiria and her paintings have been featured in local and online media magazines, interviewed by VoyageMIA online Magazine and in social media by television program, PBS' Art Loft FL. Her work has also gained national and international exposure appearing on the front cover of the 'Short Stories' guitar instrumental album by her husband, renowned musician Peter Betan. Kiria’s focus on sacred themes unites her art and poetry in unexpected ways. Abstract surreal expressionism collides with traditional form to create an unexpected harmony between painting and poetry which can be seen in the evolution of her faith-based artistic and poetic works, especially where art inspires poetry, which begets more art. Kiria elevates the symbiotic relationship between word and brushstroke by not only allowing the cyclical creative process to flow where one gives life to and enhances the other but also by incorporating her personal writing into a separate poetry painting series. Oil, acrylic and mixed media mediums on canvas, wood panel and her penned poems in journals are the creative instruments used for her harmonious works. Art and poetry have always coexisted for live painter Kiria whose credits include being house artist for Streets of Mayfair in Coconut Grove and Cafe Tu Tu Tango at their Coconut Grove and Aventura locations, various events, exhibitions and Weston Art Guild’s Pop-Up gallery. As a member, she is a regular contributor of poetry for the Weston Art Guild’s online newsletter. Kiria has been a participant in poetry readings locally and in New York City and is a member of the South Florida Writer's Association. As a poet, she has been called upon for readings of her inspirational works for celebrations of pivotal life events.  The artist extends a warm invitation into her ‘Brush and Pen’ explorations and a behind the scenes look into her work through her quarterly newsletter and welcomes opportunities for commissions, demonstrations, group and private workshops as well as live painting for both public and private events. For more information email Kay at artbykiria@gmail.com or visit artbykiria.com

Bringing learning to life through the arts! The Center for Creative Education is an educational nonprofit that was created more than 20 years ago to strengthen the presence of the arts in the classrooms of Palm Beach County, Florida. Today, our Teaching Artists work with thousands of children in schools and in after-school programs throughout the County, as well as at our Center in West Palm Beach, Florida. The children we serve A majority of the students we work with live in economically and socially challenging circumstances and are considered “at risk” of educational failure. The arts-based programs we provide are a very powerful way to improve these students’ chances of success; both academically and personally. CCE also works with advanced students who benefit from the opportunity to delve deeply into subjects through the arts and develop their creative thinking and problem solving skills. For all children, working together on these art-based projects encourages exploration, inventiveness, team building and cooperation, and changes the way they think about themselves and about school. What happens at our Center At our Center, in the Northwood Village section of West Palm Beach, we provide arts instruction for children and adults, we host art shows in our Gallery and serve as a base for many community activities. It’s also home to our administrative offices. Much of our in-house programming is targeted at people who would not otherwise be able to afford exposure to the arts or arts-based education. Classes are open to all and we encourage you to check our class schedule and attend art events
