When Visual Aids were Groundbreaking: Teaching Aids from the WPA Museum Extension Project

Join award-winning educator, Dr. Margery Marcus for an engaging historical program focused on the history of visual education in America and its connection to the landmark WPA program instituted by Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Dr. Marcus’ presentation will highlight the Bienes Museum’s unique collection and shed light on the important connections between museums and schools during the Great Depression. The lecture will include a tour through the current exhibit, Back to School with the WPA Museum Extension Project, 1935 – 1943 where you will be able to view the costume plates, models, puppets, marionettes, mannequins, artifacts and books created for schools by WPA workers at a time when visual aids in the classroom were considered revolutionary.
