Since its days as the stomping ground for music greats like Billie Holiday and Cab Calloway, Sistrunk Boulevard has always buzzed at the heart of Broward County’s black community, abound with cultural attractions to explore.
Now locals and visitors alike can discover even more at the newly launched Destination Sistrunk Welcome Center—the new hub for exploring black culture and heritage throughout Broward County. Now join the new center as it celebrates its official opening with two days of festivities, Feb. 27-28.
The celebrations begins Thursday, Feb. 27, from 4 to 7 p.m., featuring the smooth stylings of jazz stars William “Kooly” Scott & Band.
The event continues Feb. 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. with a special performance of the one-man musical, “KING: An ODE to the American Dream.” Written and performed by South Florida-based actor and director Darius J. Manuel, “KING” recounts the life of Martin Luther King Jr., blending the civil rights leader’s famous speeches with poetry and an original score infused with rap, R&B and gospel. Both events are free and open for all.
These events set the tone of the unique
cultural programming yet to come at the Destination Sistrunk Welcome Center,
which aims to engage residents, visitors, and artists alike as they explore
black culture and heritage in Broward County. The facility will feature an
information office, which will guide visitors through historic and cultural
spots throughout Broward County. The site will also function as a hub for
artists and creatives, equipped with a co-working space and arts event space.
With a nod to the past, the Welcome Center will also feature stories collected
from the community at the oral history studio.
This is all part of the Center’s mission to preserve and showcase the county’s rich black history for both residents and tourists, while providing a platform for the plethora of talent among today’s black creatives in Broward County.
