  • Susan Buzzi
    Susan Buzzi
    Photographer; Storyteller; Visual Artist
As a photo documentarian, I consider myself a social barometer – always gaging the current climate around me and taking responsibility for effective delivery. My photo documentary work has involved extremely sensitive material such as breast cancer and homelessness; and most recently, it has addressed domestic violence, addiction and human trafficking, so educating the public and raising awareness is paramount. These projects deliver fact and truth; re-imagine the system, and offer practical solutions and valuable strategies for progress and change. Aside from the COVID-19 global lockdown, the past 5 years or so have been particularly difficult for me personally. Firstly, I am female, with English not being my first language; of mixed cultures and family background; a former law enforcement officer, and now over the age of 55 (considered a senior citizen). I stopped working for about 3 years to care for my mother and when she passed, I was finally able to secure part time work which fortunately prevented me from losing my home. Then, within a year, the unexpected Pandemic hit that led to a lay-off. I did not receive any unemployment benefits until almost 7 months later; again, creating financial panic. Luckily, I was able to find part time work shortly before the holidays that now has transitioned into a fulltime position. Not necessarily in my field; however, I am surviving. Faith, family and art is in my blood. Throughout the years and all of my careers, my passion has always been, and remains, the creative arts. I strongly believe in the power of art; it can cross boundaries, heal, inspire, and create hope and possibilities for everyone. I often incorporate the visual arts, writing and music with my counseling practice to build confidence and encourage creativity. An artist as an activist is perhaps the most misunderstood and underestimated movement in culture today. Messaging is meant to be informative and may not always be pleasant for every viewer. These voices can often be difficult to hear … nevertheless, they are necessary visual metaphors for interpretation. And so, to address these issues artistically is surely a challenge, yet a rewarding task.   Susan Buzzi is the sum of many parts. She is passionate for the arts and education; an earth guardian; admirer of diversity and civility; and a staunch activist for the law and victims. She is an artist, educator, healing arts facilitator, certified coach practitioner, and longtime child/women’s/victim advocate. A graduate of Saint Thomas University; Florida Atlantic University; she attended Du Cret School of the Arts; Art Students League in N.Y.; received an Artist Residency with Atlantic Center for the Arts; funding from City of Tamarac; Saint Thomas University School of Law; Broward Health; Susan G. Komen for the Cure; as well as 2 previous Broward County Individual Artist Grants. Buzzi’s award-winning work has been exhibited in national and international forums and is included in numerous corporate and private collections throughout the U.S. She has been recognized for her volunteer efforts, dedication and vision in the not-for-profit cultural arts arena. Her candid documentary work has brought light to sensitive issues such as at-risk youth and violence prevention and homelessness. She is past President and active member of the Fort Lauderdale branch of the National League of American Pen Women and Vice Chair of the Broward County Commission on the Status of Women. A former law enforcement officer, her counseling practice concentrates primarily on rehabilitation and recovery and creating new paths for mindfulness and wellness through the arts. Her sessions address grief and loss; addiction; depression; and violence; as well as healing arts for victims of crime and those incarcerated. For the last 15 years, she has been a visiting artist for Broward County Libraries Division; Memorial Health Care System; Holy Cross Hospital; hospice and juvenile assessment/detention facilities in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties; as well as an independent consultant with local police departments and behavioral health agencies. After nearly 14 years of working on several breast cancer survivor photo documentaries and publishing 2 books, as well as 18+ exhibitions and lectures on human trafficking and domestic servitude, a personal event altered her entire direction and she now concentrates on domestic violence, abuse and women’s wellness. Her art and practice is completely focused on recovery and renewal for victims. The use of expressive therapies has produced extraordinary results and she has been involved with extensive research for the past several years. With the impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the unpleasant conversation has once again risen to the surface and demands attention. The effects have affected every facet of our lives: education; economy; government; crime; employment; housing and the mental health and well-being of our children; teens; seniors and veterans. Recently published by Middle River Press, her manuscript “Looking Back … Moving Forward” is included in a collective entitled, “The COVID Chronicles”, due out this October. Her personal account reveals several distinct areas explored during the shutdown which reinforce positivity and overcoming adversity, fear, depression and anger. Her manuscript Artful Ways was also published in The Light Between Us: True Stories of Healing Through Creative Expression by Pen Women Press. Her work with the City of Tamarac includes: Arts Education & Enrichment Programming with 2019 Teen Summer Camp; Public Art funded projects such as: “Healing Through Art for Veterans” and “In Focus” a 2-month Photography Program with Millennium Collegiate Academy. The City hosted a Lecture/Book Signing in October 2017 for her book profiling breast cancer survivors and stories entitled, “Courage, Strength & Resilience” and inducted her into the Women’s History Month Hall of Fame, 2018. She has developed and administered literary/arts-based programming for over a decade with the Broward County Libraries Division; Book Arts Programming in conjunction with The National Endowment for the Humanities; and The American Library Association with PBS-WPBT2 The Big Read in October of 2018. She has lectured for Broward College Public Safety Institute on Domestic Violence Awareness and Healing; and commissioned to create a series of framed posters addressing human trafficking and domestic servitude entitled “Responsibility & Justice”. A contributor to The John J. Brunetti Human Trafficking Academy at St. Thomas University School of Law for the past 7 years, she has designed approximately 85 art works for the permanent collection of the Human Rights Department. Presentations in 2020 include the Miami Gardens City Commission, Miami Gardens Police Department and the Broward County Commission. Buzzi was recently recognized and awarded an Honorary Membership with Alpha Phi Sigma - National Criminal Justice Honor Society Miami Chapter - through St. Thomas University; and also received an Individual Artist Achievement Award with the National League of American Pen Women.
  • Sandra Canning
    Sandra Canning
    Photographer; Visual Artist
This is the serendipitous journey of a female photographer unveiling beauty in all her disguises. Canning’s vision when creating an image is based on sharing our "Beautiful Whirled" as she sees it: through the prism of optimism, lit by hope, inspired by awe, and ruled by beauty. Her belief is that when we commune with beauty, we touch the Divine. Most of her fine art images have been captured in Florida. Her subjects include seascapes, landscapes, & architecture. "The Sunshine State in Black & White" is a body of work that explores a Florida not meant for postcards or tourist brochures. The work challenges the viewer to look beyond the typical depiction of blue skies and beaches to find a symphony of light, form, and shadow that is hidden in plain sight. Many of the images have been captured in Miami, Broward and Palm Beach and are places that we live and work nearby. Canning is mostly self-taught. Long exposure is her preferred technique because it provides a photographic record of something that lies somewhere beyond real life – “Photographing the fourth dimension (time) allows me to transport the observer to a world between worlds”, said Canning. She was born in Trinidad, grew up in St. Thomas, USVI and now resides in South Florida. Canning is also a full-time realtor who uses leading edge visual communications to sell properties. • Harold Kahn
    Harold Kahn
    Photographer; Visual Artist
Part of my concerns are with the inherent qualities of particular materials, such as sheet metal, wood, paper, wax, plaster, and clay. Aside from an Oriental sensitivity to simple materials and natural processes, I am interested in the irregularities and imperfections that result from the activity of forming each piece. Such irregularities and imperfections appear all the more significant when one compares one object to the next; hence, the repetitive nature and serial form of my work. After having made these pieces, I find myself concerned with how age and time transform each work by their cumulative effect on the materials involved. Metal rusts, wood decays, plaster cracks and chips, etc. Everything in this world breaks down and decays over time. We are all transformed with the passage of time. I hope these works suggest a spirituality – a mysterious depth which we try to approach but cannot really know. Native New Yorker Harold Kahn moved to Florida in 2021 and brought with him his large-scale wall sculptures. Fabricated in a series in one specific material, such as sheet metal, wood, clay, plaster, wax, or handmade paper, installations of his work have appeared in a variety of venues in the New York metropolitan area. His work is in the permanent collection of Yeshiva University Museum as well as in private collections. Kahn's formal art education began at the Visual Arts Center in Beersheva, Israel. He holds both BFA and MFA degrees from Queens College and SUNY Albany.

  • Rafael Montilla
    Rafael Montilla
Photographer; Visual Artist; Art Performance, art installation, street art
"Life is a pure flame and we live by an invisible sun within us.” Sir Thomas Browne Ever since I can remember, I have given importance to two things in my life: internal seeking and art. My works of art are concrete and essential approximations of my own inner and outer experiences. They are simple; they reflect me. I have based my work on the flower of life and Metatron’s Cube. Geometric Abstraction allows me to convey deeper thoughts to my audience as a divine human gift. My art is a strong response to the chaotic world around us. Exploring the elements of geometric shapes, light, and color in the combination, I try to bring about harmony, unity, and balance. I would like to reduce my artistic vocabulary to dots, lines, and shades of white. My biggest challenge is to simplify my art expression. Born in Caracas, Venezuela. I have exhibited my artwork in various cities in the United States such as Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Weston, Las Vegas, Coral Gables, New York, and the world as Canada, Spain and Venezuela HONORS AND AWARDS: Special recognition for contribution to the Art in the community, delivered by the Mayor of the City of Doral (Miami Dade), Juan Carlos Bermudez, April 27, 2017 Tomas Regalado, City of Miami Mayor proclaimed August 19, 2016 as Rafael Montilla’s Day.

  • Lendell Roberts
    Lendell Roberts
Filmmaker; Photographer; Visual Artist; Graphic Designer
Miami born artist of African American and Bahamian decent. As a graduate of Miami-Dade College, Grambling State University (HBCU), and Digital Media Arts College (now Lynn University) I have explored many facets of the digital and fine art spectrums from graphic design to pottery and so many others in between. While I have focused primarily in graphic design, photography, and abstract fine art, I have also experimented with video, website design, and motion graphics. My artwork ranges from Political to "Feel Good" in nature while striving to be aesthetically pleasing. My major influence for my work comes from my child hood view of my surroundings in inner city Miami as a member of a lower income class. Watching neighborhood trends shift, gentrification and other systematic plans continue to take affect, and new ones enacted, has lent itself to be a focal point of my artistry as the continued support for resolution is still at hand.

My work as a photographer allows me to lose myself in nature. I find great peace and tranquility in this and through my lens. My “Florida Natural Beauty” collection is a reflection an escape from reality. It gives me immense pleasure to share my passion through imagery.  It is particularly appropriate to lend a sense of peace and comfort. When people stop to view my image and reflect on a photograph I have created, I have succeeded in my work!
  • Matthew Valera
    Matthew Valera
    Photographer; Visual Artist
I go by Valera. I am an emerging artist in the Fort Lauderdale. My work ranges from photography to painting. My approach for each is different. My photography started in documentation and then progressed to making work. In that way I aim to capture something genuine and honest above all. Painting is a more internal subconscious approach. It's a way of putting subjects and tangible means to feelings that seem to have no origin in my brain. A means of understanding the world around me while giving my hands a way of dealing with anxiety. Photography I capture the world in front of me. Painting I create the world from the canvas up. Together the tie between the two provide a balancing yin yang effect, satisfying my creative nature.

Melissa Vlahos studied at Youngstown State University in Ohio and majored in Visual Art and Multi-Age Licensure in Art Education. She received a Bachelors of Science in Education, and taught high school art before falling in love and being swept away to the magical land, Greece. Vlahos says, "Living here has shaped and solidified my choices of subject matter because I explored and discovered my passion for the beauty in nature and how it mimics my inner emotions. Nature has showed me all her raw, natural magnificence and I feel a connection to it that I enjoy transmitting through artistic expression. I'm drawn to it; I center myself and become present in the moment. The experience moves me and the feelings inside of me flow from my internal world out onto a canvas or through a photograph."
