Historic Hampton House

Built in 1953, the house serves as a political, cultural and social center of America's black elite, the "spot" in Miami's black community where the rich and famous stayed, played and mingled with everyday folks on their own quest for fun in abundant sunshine. Located in the predominantly black Brownsville neighborhood, was also the spot where political activists, the heavyweight boxer Muhammad Ali, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, drafted their individual strategies for social change. When black entertainers came to Miami to entertain white audiences, they had to retreat to the black community for food and shelter. Hampton House became the place where blacks could come to relax and unwind.
