The Florida 9th District American Legion Symphonic Band, under the direction of Mr. James McGonigal, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, sponsored by the American Legion 9th District, which comprises the entirety of Broward County. With over 70 professional and amateur musicians who volunteer their time and talents, the band provides live music for enjoyment throughout the tri-county Area (Broward, Palm Beach, Dade). The band currently rehearses at American Legion Post 142 in Pompano Beach every Wednesday night from mid-August through July 4th. It also has within it, a 17 member jazz/swing band, called “Nostalgia”. Both of these organizations have performed at various venues including the Skolnick Center at Palm-Aire, St. Ambrose Catholic Church, The Town Center Club at Bonaventure, John Knox village, The State Veterans Home, American Moms for Soldiers, The City of Fort Lauderdale, and numerous veterans activities and patriotic events sponsored by the 9th District. The band was founded in January 2004 by Arthur Tenny, a veteran of Viet Nam and a member of American Legion Post 142. Art and a number of other charter members had been associated for years with the bands of Dr. Robert M. Lacey, who, up until his death in 2004, had been serving the Deerfield and Pompano Beach communities with live community band music.
