    LATINPRIDE Gallery

LATINPRIDE Gallery is collaboration between Latinos en Accion Broward County Health Committee and The Pride Center at Equality Park LGTBQ Community center. The goal of the project is to create an art exhibition space for emerging artist and promote Broward health education programs. The gallery will present original artwork collections promoting individual artist inspiration and health prevention programs of the Broward County Community. The Exhibitions are dedicated to help raise awareness and to change the perception of the more than 500 million people living with viral hepatitis B and hepatitis C and the more than 46 million people infected with the HIV worldwide. Almost four million Americans and over 300,000 Floridians are infected with the Hepatitis C virus (HCV). The disease often lies undetected for 20-30 years and is a leading cause of liver cirrhosis and liver failure. It is estimated that here are between 1.1 and 1.2 million people living with HIV in the United States with the state of Florida having the 3rd highest number of HIV/AIDS cases in the country. Broward County was one of the first and hardest hit epicenters of the AIDS pandemic. Even in the year 2010, Broward County continues to experience one of the most devastating infection rates in the country. Thousands of people; men, women, transgender persons, youth, and even infants have become infected with HIV. Many of these people have advanced to a diagnosis of AIDS, and far too many have died. These exhibitions are dedicated to all of them and to the promotion of treatment and eventually finding a cure. The Broward County Health Department will be hosting educational booths in conjunction with the exhibitions and will be providing literature to raise awareness amongst the citizens of South Florida and more specifically Broward County. The Pride Center will be administering OraQuick Advance rapid tests free of charge. The exhibitions will serve as a means of informing and educating the general public through art and to bring awareness to the importance and severity of the Hepatitis and HIV pandemics and to promote a healthy mind and body. These events will also mark the first step for Latinos en Accion to promote health awareness and prevention programs in Broward County.
