Disorientalism: Ready Mix, Reception and artist walk-through

Guest curated by Jillian Hernandez, PhD
at Francie Bishop Good Studio/Girls' Club

Ft Lauderdale 117 NE 2nd Street
Disorientalism, a collaboration between Asian-American artists Katherine Behar and Marianne M Kim, studies the disorienting effects of technologized labor, junk culture, and consumerism In Ready Mix, Disorientalism’s preoccupation with junk culture translates into junk food Using 3D lenticular prints and bobbleheads, the duo stirs up — or mixes up — the story of Aunt Jemima’s century-long makeover from “slave mammy” to “modern working mother”
This project is a chapter in The Food Groups, a five-part series focusing on race and labor in American food production and promotion One-by-one, the Disorientals encounter five historical food industry characters: Wendy of Wendy’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers, Aunt Jemima, Land O’Lakes’ Indian Maiden, Sun-Maid and Chiquita Banana In their encounters with these iconic identities, the Disorientals undertake efforts to erase the distinction between the depersonalized production and the personalized promotion of industrial food
This exhibition is part of the Girls Summit, a 3-day symposium for scholars, artists, educators, activists, therapists, and other professionals who work with girls education for hands-on workshops, presentations of innovative scholarship, round table discussions, and film screenings The 2013 program will focus on issues of girls and the body, food justice, masculinities, and feminist arts pedagogy
The Girls Summit is presented by the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami's Women on the Rise! program, co-sponsored by Girls' Club, with residency support from Cannonball Miami

Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Quincy Jones and others are featured in the exhibit which includes work by William Gottlieb and Herman Leonard, two of the genre’s best known photographers

While Gottlieb’s classic jazz photography spans the 1940s and 1950s, his work is timeless and is still being reproduced today In 1994, the United States Postal Service selected Gottlieb's portraits of Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, Mildred Bailey and Jimmy Rushing for a series of commemorative postage stamps His work can also be found in the Library of Congress and has appeared in newspapers, television documentaries, magazines, museums and on more than 250 CD covers

Constantine Manos: Florida Color includes over fifty images from the photographer’s celebrated American Color series taken in Florida between 1982 and 2009 These dynamic images, filled with saturated color, feature people and places from Jacksonville in the north to Key West in the south The photographs document both public events, such as Bike Week in Daytona Beach, and simple everyday life
Constantine Manos began his career as a photojournalist in the 1950s He became a member of Magnum Photos in 1963 and photographed for such publications as Life, Look, Esquire and Time-Life books For much of his career, Manos photographed primarily in black and white, but beginning in the early 1980s he turned increasingly to color images Two collections of his color photographs were published as American Color (1995) and American Color 2 (2003) Many of the works in these books were photographed in Florida, where Manos is a part-time resident Constantine Manos: Florida Color presents a selection of images from these books, supplemented by a number of images not published in the American Color books
Constantine Manos: Florida Color is part of Foto Fort Lauderdale, a new initiative that makes the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale a long-term home for photography Through exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and other programs, museums visitors will be able to experience photography at any time during the year Foto Fort Lauderdale is sponsored by Stiles, with additional support provided by Northern Trust

Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, Horvitz Auditorium
As one of the world's preeminent photographers, Sally Mann creates artwork that challenges viewers' values and moral attitudes Described by Time magazine as "America's greatest photographer", she first came to international prominence in 1992 with Immediate Family, a series of complex and enigmatic pictures of her three children What Remains—Mann's recent series on the myriad aspects of death and decay—is the subject of this eponymously titled documentary Filmed at her Virginia farm, Mann is surrounded by her husband and now-grown children, and her willingness to reveal her artistic process allows the viewer to gain exclusive entrance to her world Never one to compromise, she reflects on her own personal feelings about mortality as she continues to examine the boundaries of contemporary art Spanning five years, What Remains contains unbridled access to the many stages of Mann's work, and is a rare glimpse of an eloquent and brilliant artist

Region4: Transformation Through Imagination, an innovative and powerful new art exhibition, The exhibition features works by seventeen artists who sought to transform the reality of the Gainesville Cabot/Koppers EPA Superfund site into images that convey both the history of the problem and the possibilities for restoration and positive change The artists used scientific data from the site to create their art works, often forming partnerships with scientists who served as consultants on the projects The artists have also worked to portray the concerns, hopes, beliefs and experiences of the people whose lives have been affected by the site over the past thirty years Those who are interested in environmental and social justice issues, as well as art enthusiasts, will find this exhibit compelling and fascinating

Girls' Club presents Following the Line, featuring works by thirty international artists using hand-drawn line as the primary unit of expression Curated by Miami gallerist Carol Jazzar, the works in Following the Line are created in many mediums, including graphite, ink, colored pencil, layered mylar, etching, aquatint, lithography and hand-drawn animation

Manifesting the close connection to the artist’s hand and thought, drawings have historically been defined as intimate Some are smaller in scale Some are conceived as preparatory to final works in other media Drawings may commit fleeting, ephemeral concepts to paper, itself a less permanent support The persistent vitality of drawing today, developing alongside high tech digital and moving image media, will be emphasized Linear works that owe their inspiration to drawing will craft an “expanded” definition of drawing in use today

A catalog designed by Augusto Mendoza will accompany the exhibition and includes essays by curator Carol Jazzar, independent curator and writer Sue Spaid, and poetry by Denise Duhamel

A year-long schedule of artist talks, workshops and film screenings invite the public to share Girls' Club's investigation of drawing in contemporary art For details of events visit: http://girlsclubcollectionorg/events

It's a natural history epic It's a compelling detective story It's a scientific adventure at its best It took Dr Fred Urquhart almost 40 years to discover the monarch butterflies' secret hideaway and prove the most incredible migration on Earth Following the year-long annual migration cycle of the butterflies, the award-winning production team filmed hundreds of millions of monarchs in their remote wintering sanctuaries in Mexico in 2011 and again in 2012 and also along their migratory routes from Canada, across the US and into Mexico The IMAX 3D technology immerses you in the astounding migration experience as two generations of the butterflies migrate north and then a Super Generation miraculously finds its way from Canada to a few isolated mountaintops in Mexico - to a place it has never been! The Glackens Collection, bequeathed to The Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale in 1991 by Ira Glackens, son of William, covers the artist’s versatile talent from 1892, when he made a living as an artist/reporter, to 1938, the year of his death, when he was internationally known as America’s Renoir This encyclopedic collection boasts a wide variety of examples of Glackens’s artistry – from casual crayon sketches to a unique hand-carved wooden panel, from rare etchings to heartwarming family photographs This exhibition celebrates the publication of a brand-new scholarly manual for the Glackens Collection The text, written by noted art historian and curator Elizabeth Colliery, discusses in depth many of the works on display here

The Exhibition is on view through February 2015
