Contaminated Sites in Broward County Lecture with Lorenzo Fernandez, Broward County Pollution Prevention Division
One of the greatest threats to our drinking water supply is contamination from industrial activity and leaking underground or above ground hazardous materials storage tanks The Biscayne Aquifer, Broward County's sole source of drinking water supplies, lies very close to the surface, making it extremely vulnerable to contamination from surface and near-surface pollution sources This presentation shows how contaminated sites are identified, assessed and cleaned up, and provides statistical information on the subject

The greatest jazz musicians of the 20th century have been immortalized by their music and now the Miramar Cultural Center ArtsPark presents timeless iconic images that capture each artist's unique essence in the exhibit All that Jazz: Photographs of Jazz Legends in the Ansin Family Gallery at the Miramar Cultural Center through May 2013

Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Quincy Jones and others are featured in the exhibit which includes work by William Gottlieb and Herman Leonard, two of the genre’s best known photographers

While Gottlieb’s classic jazz photography spans the 1940s and 1950s, his work is timeless and is still being reproduced today In 1994, the United States Postal Service selected Gottlieb's portraits of Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, Mildred Bailey and Jimmy Rushing for a series of commemorative postage stamps His work can also be found in the Library of Congress and has appeared in newspapers, television documentaries, magazines, museums and on more than 250 CD covers

Called "the greatest jazz photographer in the history of the genre" by President Bill Clinton, Leonard’s photographs are a unique record of the jazz scene of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s with 155 original prints on display in the Smithsonian Museum’s permanent collection He received an Honorary Master’s of Science in Photography from The Brooks Institute of Photography and was awarded the coveted Lucie Award for Portraiture, the Milt Hinton Award for Excellence in Jazz Photography from the Jazz Photographer's Association, the Excellence in Photography Award from the Jazz Journalists Association and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Downbeat Magazine

Groundbreaking Reads Adult Summer Reading Program discusses Wild by Cheryl Strayed
Wild

NATIONAL BESTSELLER
A Best Nonfiction Book of 2012: The Boston Globe, Entertainment Weekly

A Best Book of the Year: NPR, St Louis Dispatch, Vogue
At twenty-two, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything In the wake of her mother’s death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life With no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State—and she would do it alone Told with suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her

Girls' Club presents Following the Line, featuring works by thirty international artists using hand-drawn line as the primary unit of expression Curated by Miami gallerist Carol Jazzar, the works in Following the Line are created in many mediums, including graphite, ink, colored pencil, layered mylar, etching, aquatint, lithography and hand-drawn animation

Manifesting the close connection to the artist’s hand and thought, drawings have historically been defined as intimate Some are smaller in scale Some are conceived as preparatory to final works in other media Drawings may commit fleeting, ephemeral concepts to paper, itself a less permanent support The persistent vitality of drawing today, developing alongside high tech digital and moving image media, will be emphasized Linear works that owe their inspiration to drawing will craft an “expanded” definition of drawing in use today

A catalog designed by Augusto Mendoza will accompany the exhibition and includes essays by curator Carol Jazzar, independent curator and writer Sue Spaid, and poetry by Denise Duhamel

A year-long schedule of artist talks, workshops and film screenings invite the public to share Girls' Club's investigation of drawing in contemporary art For details of events visit: http://girlsclubcollectionorg/events
