Anything is Possible
August 22-September 21, 2011
Add Review/Comment
Broward College’s A. Hugh Adams Central Campus, Fine Arts Gallery will feature the group exhibition Anything is Possible from August 22 through September 21, 2011. The exhibition surveys three different perspectives on manufactured realities. One artist creates fictional identities, one fabricates organic beings, and one artist actualizes a new world. The artists featured in this exhibition are Susan Lee-Chun, Raul Mendez and Andrew Nigon. This show will include site-specific video installation, drawing, painting, and sculpture
Raul Mendez will exhibit a series of paintings and drawings constituting the conscious beginning of his fictional world. In his artist statement Mendez implies that “Eventually the places will have names. The population will have faces, identities and histories. The locations will have maps. The houses will have rooms. The rooms, objects, a cosmology will develop, myths will arise. In essence a fictional realm parallel to our own will come into being.”
Raul Mendez is Miami artist who exhibits both locally and nationally. He is a full time professional airline pilot, in the air two weeks out of every month. Recently his work was shown at the Drawing Center in New York City and Miami Art Museum’s “New Work 2010: Video” exhibit.
Recent MFA graduate of University of South Florida, Andrew Nigon will exhibited mixed media sculptures. He has shown his works both state wide and San Juan, Puerto Rico. “Using the discarded detritus of society in chorus with materials such as polyurethane foam and second-hand textiles, I create heroic yet tragic monuments devoted to a human race that is trapped in an incomplete and fractured world.”
Susan Lee-Chun was born in Seoul, Korea, and lives and works in Miami. Since studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2004, MA), Susan Lee-Chun has exhibited widely in the U.S. and abroad, and held residencies at the Bemis Center in Omaha, NE, Three Walls in Chicago, IL, and McColl Center for Visual Art, Charlotte, North Carolina (2011). Her work is in important public and private collections, including the Miami Art Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami.
Lee-Chun’s site specific video installation “Everybody suz-ercise!” is a self-referential examination of race and identity politics embodied in a trinity of alter egos, the Suz. In “Everybody suz-ercise!”, the Suz-ercise product, activity and lifestyle shows how one can pursue ultimate happiness and fulfillment using their gym, garments, music, and choreography.
