June 30, 2011-May 31, 2012
Add Review/Comment
HistoryMiami will celebrate the opening of Aviation in Miami, an 11 month-long exhibition that explores the first 100 years of aviation in Miami. It begins in July, 1911, when all of Miami gathered to witness an extraordinary event. Aviator Howard Gill climbed into the cockpit of a wood and cloth-winged bi-plane furnished by the Wright Brothers and took off from the Miami Golf Links. The exhibition offers several aviation environments including a fuselage, a security screening checkpoint, and the setting for one of Miami's early All American Air Maneuvers. Scale models of airplanes important in Miami's history, a computer flight simulator and a special section that examines significant airline crashes and hijackings that have occurred in the region are all features of Aviation in Miami. Preview reception from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. open to HistoryMiami members only, and the preview opens to the public at 6:30. Enjoy tasty appetizers from participating Downtown Miami restaurants, wine from Kork Wine & Cheese, beer from Magners Irish Cider and live music throughout the evening at a Get to know your DWNTWN reception held in conjunction with the exhibition opening.
