Conductor and pianist Joao Carlos Martins, one of Brazil's most important and active musicians, takes the stage on Thursday, September 22, 2011. This will be one of only two North American concerts he and the Bachiana Filarmônica will be presenting during September 2011. Joao Carlos Martins and Bachiana Filarmonica present Vivaldi's Concerto for Four Violins featuring violinist Elisa Fukuda, J.S. Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3 as well as works by Brazilian composers Heitor Villa-Lobos, Guerra Peixe, and Mateus Araujo showcasing how African rhythms have influenced Brazilian music since 18th century. During the Brazilian works, the Bachiana Filarmônica will be joined by 9 percussionists from "Vai-Vai", one of Brazil's top competing Samba Schools. Joao Carlos Martins will also introduce the young Tenor Jean Willian, whose talent and hard work have lead to a bright future, despite having been raised in an under privileged favela.
