The Art of Caring: A Look at Life through Photography
June 5-September 25, 2011
Add Review/Comment
Through the use of photographs and film, The Art of Caring examines how key events are celebrated and honored and how pivotal decisions are made by different cultures throughout the world. The exhibition is organized into seven thematic sections: Children and Family, Love, Wellness, Healing, Disaster, Aging and Remembering. The exhibition opens with a group of compelling images by Annie Leibovitz that she personally selected to visualize all seven themes as a concise introduction. The more than two hundred photographs in the exhibition have been lent by artists, museums, private collectors, and from the holdings of the Time/LIFE Picture Collection, which includes a number of classic images by legendary photographers such as Alfred Eisenstaedt, Gordon Parks, W. Eugene Smith, and Margaret Bourke-White. In addition, works by established contemporary photographers such as Tina Barney, Nan Goldin, Sally Mann, Duane Michals, Nicolas Nixon, and Neal Slavin are combined with works by many younger artists including Elinor Carucci, Albert Chong, Loretta Lux, Walter Martin and Eliza French. Inspired in part by the legendary photography exhibition The Family of Man, which was organized in 1955 by Edward Steichen for New York’s Museum of Modern Art, The Art of Caring is entertaining, thought-provoking and inspiring. Organized by the New Orleans Museum of Art and guest curated by art historian and former museum director Cynthia Goodman, Ph.D., the exhibition is accompanied by a fully-illustrated catalogue with an extensive essay by Dr. Goodman.
