The ACCH presents a solo exhibition by Ft Lauderdale artist Lisa Rockford, featuring a series of large-scale banner paintings and interactive displays. These “she-monsters” are humorous representations of mythical and historical females like Judith, Blodeuwedd, Circe, Lilith, Joan of Arc & Persephone.

 

The brightly colored Neo-pop portraits combine attributes of masculine & feminine, human, animal & android. Segments are appropriated from Barbies, monsters, Disney princesses, wrestlers, superheroes, etc. and joined seamlessly into depictions that are an unnerving assimilation of the iconography. The imagery is playful, yet illustrates the fear of “powerful“ women, challenging the viewer to disband stereotypical notions of femininity and examine questions of gender, power, and persona.

As part of the installation, there will be interactive cutouts; painted life-size she-monsters (MDF constructions), with an opening for the viewer to place their face in the hole for an amusing photo op.
