Recently catalogued and conserved, the Museum’s holdings of Oceanic and African art are presented in this lively and engaging twin installation that includes wall hangings, totems, wood carvings, musical instruments, as well as bowls, vessels and textiles. The art of Oceania encompasses the cultural heritage of widely-dispersed indigenous peoples occupying the islands of the Pacific Ocean. The Oceanic collection of the Museum of Art is drawn primarily from Melanesia, specifically from the modern day nation of Papua New Guinea.Impressive in its numbers as well as its quality, the collection contains paintings, carvings, and household objects and implements, many of which are meant to convey themes related to fertility and the supernatural. Likewise, objects from the Museum’s African art holdings possess both practical applications as well as spiritual overtones. Power is both the medium and the message in the heavily-carved masks and totems that are found in abund ance on both the African continent as well as throughout Oceania. They form a highlight of the installation and allow the visitor to make visual and thematic connections between the arts of both continents.
