THE CATCHER IN THE RYE is a solo exhibition by Italian artist Andrea Mastrovito. He will create a site-specific installation expressly realized for the Broward College Fine Arts Gallery. The work is inspired by J.T. Salinger’s best known novel “The Catcher in the Rye” and the murder of John Lennon.

Composed of thousands of black and white photocopies, four hundred hand-cut books of animals and flowers, and the artist’s personal history, Matrovito’s work investigates the subtle border between fiction and reality.

Andrea Mastrovito was born in Bergamo in 1978. His artistic path snakes through the re-inventions of painting and of its supports, from the simple canvas to the whole gallery. His painting is no more understood as chromatic covering of a surface. It’s not the simple act of painting but becomes the carrying, constructive part of the artwork itself, disappearing behind the simple gesture of cutting paper (which replaces the brushstroke) and re-emerging in the totality of his environmental installations. Often his work's aim is to invite the spectator into a sort of tableau vivant.

Mastrovito is an international artist with numerous solo and group exhibitions in galleries across Italy, Europe and the United States. His work has been shown in many museums such as M.A.X.X.I. and Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome, Centro Pecci in Prato.
