As part of ART FALLOUT 2010
    Opening Reception: Saturday, October 16, 2010, 5-8pm
    Exhibition Dates: October 16 – November 12, 2010
Admission: Free & Open to the Public

The Myth of Power visual art exhibition features over 40 regional artists that offer insightful investigations into notions of power. The Myth of Power exhibition will open on October 16 at 1310 Gallery as part of ART FALLOUT 2010, initiated by Girls’ Club.
The artwork featured in the exhibition will range from thought-provoking performance art, performed during the opening night, in addition to 3 floors of sculpture, painting, mixed media, site-specific installation, and video art.
Artist Lisa Rockford acted as juror for this group show. Artists were selected from an open call asking for individual conceptions of “power” in visual form. The result is a diverse range of artworks, whose imagery ranges from reactions to in regards to social doctrine, hierarchy, gender or racial inequity, or other forces of power, influence, including imagery of physical strength, heroism, idols, sovereigns, icons, etc.
Cash Awards will be given to innovative artworks, including an “Audience choice” award, selected by opening night attendees. Artworks will also be for sale. There will also be a section of “mail art” works contributed by numerous international artists that created works specifically for the show.
Lisa Rockford, Curator of The Myth of Power, states,
“My main objective in planning this exhibition is to discover and feature exceptional, under-represented local artists. It is also my goal that the exhibition will facilitate an enlightening discussion of cultural issues. I picked the theme of ‘power’ because questions of power (be it political, economic, commercial, personal, etc.) seem to be at the basis of many prevailing current events that test the character of our humanity.
I have selected a wide range of artists whose works are contemporary and innovative, offer a strong visual impact, yet contain symbolism and allegory. Many of these works draw from popular imagery and question stereotypes and social mores.”

Sponsored by PRP Wine International and Koji Collection.
The exhibition will also be complimented later in the month by a lecture and film screenings.

Art Fallout, a Day for Contemporary Art
    Saturday, October 16, 5-8 pm
Girls’ Club to lead a Tour of Downtown Fort Lauderdale’s Contemporary Art Scene
    Free bus transportation

September 10, 2010, Fort Lauderdale, FL -- To celebrate National Arts and Humanities Month, Girls’ Club will host Art Fallout in collaboration with 1310 Gallery at Sailboat Bend Artist Lofts and 18 Rabbit Gallery as an occasion to support the production and presentation of contemporary art in Downtown Fort Lauderdale.
All South Florida artists are invited to submit artworks to a one-day open-call visual art exhibition at Girls’ Club, at 117 NE 2nd Street, held Saturday, October 16th, 2010, from 5pm to 8pm. All works are accepted and presented to the public for the one day exhibition event. A panel of prominent South Florida arts professionals will informally judge the works in the exhibition on their merits and the public is invited to give personal feedback to the artists via a system of handwritten messages. A fun way to connect artists and art enthusiasts, perhaps inspiring individuals to start their own art collections!

Simultaneously, neighboring artist spaces and galleries will join in and host their own exhibition openings and events. Look for the round purple Fallout signs designating each location.<
18 Rabbit Gallery, a contemporary art exhibition space located in the F.A.T. Village Arts District, will open "Altered States", an exhibition about mind/body relationships, their first in their new space located at 17 NW 5th Street.
1310 Gallery, located in the Sailboat Bend Artists Lofts at 1310 SW 2nd Court, presents “The Myth of Power,” a group exhibit showcasing innovative works by regional artists, juried by artist Lisa Rockford.
The Museum of Art/Fort Lauderdale at 1 E Las Olas Blvd. will be open that evening from 5pm-8pm with free admission.

A free bus will operate from 5pm to 9pm to transport attendees from one event space to the next. Free parking is available at: NW 1st Ave between NE 5th & NE 6th Streets in F.A.T. Village and NE 2nd Avenue across from Girls’ Club.

Art Fallout will be an annual event, and the organizers expect that it will ignite enthusiasm and bring together local artists and exhibition spaces so that they may develop new audiences for their works. Art aficionados will be pleased to discover the hotbed of creativity that is developing in Fort Lauderdale.
