TWIST: Paintings by Lisa Rockford
February 12, 2010
The TWIST Art Exhibtion will end on Feb. 12 with a Closing reception, featuring Live Music with Pocket of Lollipops. The night has an Anti-Valentine's theme with Black Clothing attire. TWIST: Paintings by Lisa Rockford Surveying the portrayals of gender and romance, produced with contemporary iconic and cartoon imagery, Lisa Bulten Rockford presents two distinct series of paintings in her solo exhibition Twist. Spanning all three floors of the 1310 Gallery, Lisa’s playful manipulation of popular imagery comprises both a series of large and vibrant oil paintings, and more than 30 intimate acrylic paintings on paper. The monumental scale and rich coloration of Lisa’s canvases gives a distinct power to her hybridized figures and landscapes (that are derived, and pieced, from various sets of children’s fashion plate toy sets), while the cool, graphic, and poster-sized format of her “Barbie Magic Reveal Series” directly references the fun pads from which they have been meticulously enlarged, distorted and enhanced. Three colorful videos have also been made specifically for the exhibit. The playful nature of Lisa Bulten Rockford’s work is immediately engaging. Yet, careful consideration of the imagery reveals a subversive deconstruction, and reconstruction, of the seemingly familiar content. This interface between the viewer and the image is designed to mimic and question our interaction with, and understanding of, popular imagery; and to expose the agendum it often incorporates. Twist’s thematic focus on romance and relationships is the perfect prelude to the Valentine season. Lisa’s show will culminate with a closing reception, and Anti-Valentine’s day party, featuring a live performance by the visual/musical duo Pocket of Lollipops. Lisa Rockford is an adjunct instructor at Broward College, and received her MFA from the top-ranked painting program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has participated in exhibitions both nationally and internationally, has been featured on Chicago Public Radio, and covered by the Chicago Reader, Time Out Chicago, Peel Magazine, ARTISTOCATS Magazine and the Miami Herald. Lisa currently resides and creates her practice in the Sailboat Bend Artist Lofts. 1310 Gallery is located at 1310 SW 2nd Ct. (Middle St.), Ft.
