Come Back, Little Sheba was William Inge's first Broadway play (followed by Picnic, The Dark at the Top of the Stairs and Bus Stop). It won Tony Awards in 1950 for its two leads: Shirley Booth and Sidney Blackmer. The film version, which because of movie censorship was less frank than the play, was released in 1952; Shirley Booth was awarded the Oscar among many other prizes for her performance. In 1974, the first version of the musical premiered in Chicago. Kaye Ballard portrayed Lola, but the production never reached Broadway as planned. In 2001 it was revived at the White Barn Theatre in Westport, Connecticut with Donna McKechnie as Lola. A recording of this production was released by Original Cast Records.
