Free Family Day: Delou Africa Dance Ensemble

This Free Family Day performance features Delou Africa Dance Ensemble. Formed in 1987, it rose from a need to preserve and showcase African dance, drums, and culture. Delou is a Woloff word that means, 'back' or 'return to.' Having to go back to Africa to study dance, music and culture, founding member Njeri Plato-Dioubate then felt it was appropriate to name the company Delou Africa Dance Ensemble (back to Africa). The ensemble's members are dedicated to the preservation of African culture. They draw upon a wide range of influences, both traditional and contemporary, to achieve their artistic expression. Delou's core vision is inspired by the West African folklore tradition, but is open to other folkloric art forms from other regions of Africa as well as Caribbean, Haitian and Cuban Folklore.
