John Sandell, who joined the faculty in 2004, teaches architectural design and theory courses. He has previously taught at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Milan, Portland State University, Department of Architecture, the University of Oregon, Graduate School of Design in Portland and at California State University, Florence, Italy. He is a registered architect in Italy and his design practice has completed projects ranging from residential building to mixed-use urban interventions. Prior to opening his own studio, he collaborated with architects and designers including Ettore Sottsass, Charles Pfister, Robert Obrist and Aldo Rossi. His focus on design is enhanced by his research addressing temporality and towards reasserting the work of the individual and the collective imagination in ecology, expression and meaning in cultural production.
