Born in Harlem, New York in 1920, Charles Mills is a contemporary of most of the luminaries of the artistic and literary movement known as the Harlem Renaissance. The over fifty works exhibited at the Main Library take the visitor through African-American history and the Harlem Renaissance in works such as Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Marcus Garvey, Paul Robson to Barack Obama and writers and artists ranging from Langston Huge, Zora Neal Hurston, James Baldwin, BB King, Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Romare Bearden, to dancers Josephine Baker and Catherine Dunham. What comes out is a map of the African American experience weaving slavery with civic and political struggles and the literary and performing arts contributions by African-Americans.
