The Pianist and Lisl Bogart

The film, The Pianist is a dramatic, true story about Polish Jewish musician Wladyslaw Szpilman, the most accomplished piano player in all of Poland, who struggles to survive the destruction of the Warsaw ghetto during World War II. Guest speaker Lisl Bogart is the only member of her extended family of 43 who survived the Holocaust. She will share her personal experiences of this tragic period in history. Lisl was born in Prauge, Czechoslovakia on May 7, 1926. She was forced to leave school soon after the German occupation of Czechoslovakia. In 1942, she was deported with her family to the Terezin Concentration Camp. In September 1943, her parents and her brother were taken from there to Aushwitz where they perished. When she came to the U.S. after the war, Lisl lived in Illinois and was a director of the Holocaust Memorial Foundation of Illinois. Now living in Florida, she has been intensely involved in Holocaust education, speaking in schools, universities, churches, and synagogues. In 2003, Lisl was recognized by the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center as the Speaker of the Year. Lisl is the mother of two children and has five grandchildren.
