These “she-monsters” are drawn from pre-existing pop culture imagery, humorously referencing historical myth and narrative, inspired by goddesses and heroines like Ariadne, Baba Yaga, Cailleach, Circe, Ishtar, Hel, Lilith, Joan of Arc, Judith, Vesta and Yemaya. These brightly colored neo-pop portraits combine attributes of masculine and feminine, human, animal and android. Segments appropriated from Barbies, monsters, Disney princesses, wrestlers, superheroes, etc., are joined seamlessly into portraits that are an unnerving assimilation of the iconography. The imagery is playful, yet plays on the fear of “powerful” women, and challenges the viewer to disband stereotypical notions of femininity and examine questions of gender, power, and persona.
